Walking is central to my practice. On everyday walks, I explore my relationship with the surroundings and observe how spaces are created, limited and used. I focus on physical boundaries—particularly fences—and how these define pathways and organise spaces. I am interested in their forms, materials and locations as well as  their social and political implications.

By drawing and painting, I investigate the language and materiality of fences in different environments, such as the paths along the south side of the river Thames and suburban areas. Through my practice, I engage with the ambiguous meanings of these structures, exploring tensions between presence and invisibility, rigidity and temporality, interruption and repetition, and public and private space. I approach fences as thresholds: transitional elements that exist between these conditions.

Process and materiality are fundamental to my work. I combine graphic elements, pictorial forms and frottage techniques, in which gesture, texture, and the accumulation of marks highlight the physical labour of making. During the creative process, I explore sensations of movement and transit through colours, shapes and lines. At the same time I seek to convey the embodied experience of walking and encounters with boundaries using embossing techniques, transferring the textures of fences onto fabric to create volumes on the canvas.

My work functions as a map of the sensations of my walks, where layers overlap and show multiple ways to look, to move around, to remain in between, to jump the lines, hold the volume or draw a new space.

I conceive walking as a method for questioning and redefining boundaries. Combined with my practice and research, this allows me to experience spaces as fluid, unstable and open to reinterpretation.
