Let me ring again.
Nothing here is defined on its own. Line against form, the pressed mark against the drawn one, paint against volume. None of them wins and none of them cancels the other. What that negotiation produces is space: an opening that was not there before either side started working on the canvas.
The volume is pressed, not painted. I rub the fabric against a fence or a wall and it picks up the relief. Then the paint carries on with the job: it covers and uncovers at the same time, nothing is ever fully hidden. The monotypes do the same in another material. Each layer goes over the last one, not to hide it but to look after it, and the waiting in between isn’t drying time, it’s the time each state needs before the next one can meet it properly. Oil gets more transparent as it ages, so the first layer will find its way back to the surface on its own. What they carry isn’t a gesture, it’s the work of keeping a surface going.
