Walking a river

This is the series where the structures started to matter. What kept stopping me on my way to the studio wasn’t the river, it was everything built to hold it back: railings, barriers, walls. They decided where I could walk. Painting and drawing those spaces is where I understood that a boundary is never only physical: somebody designed it, somebody maintains it, and most of the time you don’t even see it. That question is what the later work is made of.
